Benefits of W-Strap

W-strap steel belt delivers a number of excellent benefits for construction projects of all types. W-strap steel belt provides several advantages for buildings and construction companies, from its cost-effectiveness to its versatility. It can be used for a variety of different applications and offers the benefits of rapid construction, durability, and even an eco-friendly building method.

Cost-effective
Finding ways to cut costs without cutting corners is crucial in the construction industry. Cost-effective solutions need to provide good quality even as they help to save money. W-strap construction is ideal for this, offering an affordable material and method of construction while still ensuring the final product is of excellent quality. Decreased construction time makes using w-strap structures more cost-effective and there are other ways to save too. The durability and the fact that steel can be recycled both help with further savings.

Fast Build Times
Faster construction is possible when using w-strap. Pre-engineered steel parts make it easier to construct buildings and arrive on site ready to be used. Construction can be sped up significantly and even larger projects can be completed much more quickly compared to using more traditional materials and construction methods. There's no need for measuring and cutting on-site because everything is prefabricated, and project managers even have more time to turn their attention to other matters that require their help.

Durability
Durability is another excellent benefit of w-strap construction. Steel is extremely durable and is sure to last a long time. In addition, despite its durability, it's also a lot lighter than wood. The durability of steel means that it requires very little maintenance, which reduces costs for building owners. It also helps buildings to withstand high winds and other adverse conditions, including fire and even earthquakes. It's also resistant to decay and to pests, making it a great choice for more durable buildings.

Eco-friendliness
W-strap buildings are an eco-friendly option too. Steel is the world's most recycled product, and both energy use and co2 emissions have been reduced in the steel industry over the last few decades. Steel buildings can provide excellent energy efficiency too, especially when combined with other solutions. Airtight connections between steel parts create a completely sealed envelope for the building.

Functionality of W-Strap Steel Belts

W-Strap steel belts are an essential component in various industries, playing a crucial role in the functionality of many products. These versatile pieces provide stability, support, and durability to different structures and objects. The use of metal brackets can be found in architecture, construction, automotive, and even household appliances.

One of the primary functions of W-Strap steel belts is to provide support and reinforcement. In construction, metal brackets are used to connect beams, trusses, and other structural elements, ensuring the stability and integrity of the building. These brackets are designed to withstand heavy loads and adverse weather conditions, making them vital for the safety of the structure and its occupants.

Metal brackets also find application in the automotive industry. They are commonly used in the assembly of car frames and chassis, providing strength and stability to the vehicle. These brackets help distribute the weight evenly, ensuring a smooth and safe ride for the driver and passengers. Additionally, metal brackets are utilized in the suspension system, contributing to the overall performance and handling of the vehicle.

In household appliances, metal brackets play a significant role in ensuring the proper functioning of various devices. From refrigerators to washing machines, metal brackets are used to secure components and support heavy loads. These brackets are designed to withstand vibrations and movements, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the appliance.

How Are W-Strap Steel Belts Made?

There is a large movement in the W-Strap steel belt industry to utilize more recycled steel. Recycled steel melted in the electric arc furnaces of mini-mills is being used as the source of raw materials for an increasing number of products, largely due to its lower price.

However, conventional processes for producing steel strapping and cold-rolled strip steel restrict manufacturers from using more than 50% recycled steel. In addition, steel strapping and cold-rolled strip steel traditionally require many production steps. They are produced from primary steel that has been cast into slab, heated, rolled to achieve the desired thickness, and slit to the desired width. The slitting process produces microcracks along the edge of the strapping or strip, which reduce tensile strength.

A new continuous process produces steel strapping and 1/2" to 6" strip steel from the rod and strip stock made from scrap steel in mini-mills. The new process creates steel strapping and strip with improved strength and quality due to the absence of microcracks caused by the conventional slitting process. The finished product is cheaper because of the lower cost associated with using rod and lower conversion costs. In addition, the higher tensile strength of the W-Strap steel belt allows for thinner strapping.

Materials of W-Strap Steel Belts

W-strap steel belt is constructed from a mix of different steel leagues. What makes steel strapping strong is that it has the highest break strength compared to other strapping materials. This means it holds the heaviest loads without the possibility of materials breaking. W-strap steel belt works well for holding materials that contain hard corners and sharp edges, for hot steel applications like coils, rods, wire etc. It also makes sense using steel when a load is very heavy and non-compressible.

Its rigid construction makes it best to hold loads that can settle. This occurs because steel doesn't lose its shape due to its firmness but if for example you're storing some heavy steel products on wooden logs, the logs can lose volume due to the weight of the steel and the drying process. This sometimes makes the steel strap around the product loosen. Steel strap resistance to wearing and corrosion might vary from its type, grade and use, for example the standard blued steel can corrode in outdoor (moisture oxidation), otherwise the painted steel strap can resist.

Steel strap is advantaged over polyester strap because of its resistance to uv rays exposure. However, be careful when strapping steel product with steel strap for outdoor storage, if you do not use the correct steel strap it might oxidate and the rust can pass from the strap to the product.

How Long Do W-Strap Steel Belt Last? .

Materials like AR500 and AR550 are highly abrasion-resistant and able to withstand substantial impact. As we mentioned previously, these plates are multi-hit rated. AR500 steel is often used for industrial purposes such as on armored vehicles and dump truck beds due to its strength.

W-Strap steel belt have a 20-year shelf life, compared to the five-year shelf life of most ballistic plates. You don't have to worry about steel armor going bad and most people will not need to replace their steel plates more than once in their lifetime. That's just one area where steel has a clear advantage over ceramic, which we'll cover more on below.

Considerations for Choosing a W-Strap

If you're shopping for a w-strap, you should first decide your tensile strength requirement, cover thickness, and cover type depending on the material being transported and loaded. Also of particular importance is the operating environment in which the conveyor transports material. Conveyors that move packaging or light materials in temperature-controlled warehouses won't have the same demands as those transporting heavy products underground in mines and quarries. This is why the application and environment should be the two top considerations when selecting a w-strap.

Above Or Underground?
The key difference between above-ground and underground mining belts is the materials used in the manufacturing process. A standard surface or above-ground w-strap is composed of highly flammable petrochemicals. If used in an underground mining application, there's a good chance that the belt can combust and present a severe safety hazard.

  • Underground

Underground mining belts are made of flame-resistant materials. Special agents, impregnation paste, and rubber components are added during manufacturing to help decrease the friction factor and increase fire resistance.

  • Surface/above-ground

The selection of an above-ground conveyor belt is mainly determined by the properties of the raw materials you're transporting. The levels of humidity, granularity, and abrasion characteristics are all essential factors in this decision.
For example, highly abrasive materials such as iron ore, metallurgic coke, and quartz will require a much sturdier belt than moderately abrasive materials, such as ash or sand.

Nature Of Material Transported
Under ideal conditions, the average lifespan of a w-strap is anywhere from three to ten years, depending on length, transfer design, etc. The nature of the bulk materials you're transporting can also significantly affect belt lifespan.
For example, sharp, jagged, abrasive materials can damage the belt much faster. This is why it's important to choose a belt that's specifically designed for your application and is well-supported in the loading zone.

Fireproofing
If your mining conveyor operates in an underground environment, it likely has to comply with msha part 14 fire resistance requirements. Make sure you're fully aware of the rules and regulations that can impact the type of belt you select for your conveyor to ensure you're operating at maximum levels of safety, not to mention staying compliant.

Service Life
Some belts are made to last longer than others, and certain factors like longevity and durability are important based on the particular type of environment.
Conveyors running underground or transporting material from mines and quarries pose greater demands on the conveyor belt than a line in a factory transporting empty boxes.
Understand your needs when it comes to durability and ruggedness. Failure to consider this could result in productivity loss and increased downtime.

Corrosion-resistance
Belts can corrode—especially those that incorporate metals into their makeup. While corrosion may not be as much of a worry in a climate-controlled facility, it can pose challenges on underground conveyors where temperatures, uv light, moisture levels, and humidity tend to fluctuate.

Belt Width & Length
Since all belts aren't made for the same applications, they aren't constructed in similar widths or sizes.
For example, the belts you see on the conveyor belt systems in grocery store checkouts are much smaller in width and length than the ones you'd find underground transporting products from the mine.
While many belts can be custom-made to fit a desired length and width, it's always best to know your sizing requirements.

Temperature
The temperature of the materials you're transporting is another vital consideration. For example, rock and ore that come straight from the ground could be as hot as 220°f. While this is not enough to catch the belt on fire, it could potentially cause irreparable damage.
A belt designed with specific thermal properties can help mitigate damage caused by high-temperature materials.
